For the 2nd game this season against Nanaimo, the Kings held a 1-0 lead, but were then over run by a Nanaimo team on home ice. Unlike game 1 of the season series, the Kings were able to tie the game in the 3rd period, however let in the game winning goal with 12 seconds left on the clock. Say that game goes to overtime…add it with the loss to Victoria in the final second of the game, and there’s 2 points minimum. Those two points would put the Kings 2nd in the Island Division, instead of 4th.
But that’s how tight the division is, and how difficult each and every divisional game is. The Kings will be without some key personnel. Evan Richardson, Luke Ripley and Jonah Imoo all left the team in Nanaimo and will head to Calgary today for Canada West selection camp. In comes goaltender Evan Roch (who will wear number 1), and forward Corey Renwick (who will wear number 44).
Against a high-scoring Capitals team, which can score 9 or none on any given night, a complete effort will be needed. The Kings have had steady, and at time spectacular goaltending this season. It’s now a question of the defence successfully clearing pucks, the forward chasing after them, and establishing the Kings game in the corners.
The Caps are once again coming off a tough loss. It seems a reoccuring theme for Cowichan this year against Powell River. On Friday, the Caps last inside the final 9 seconds to the Clippers, a story we covered on last night’s broadcast. The Caps are 2nd in Island scoring, but have the highest goals per game in the Division. The night after losing 5-1 to the Kings in an effort where their big offensive weapons essentially no-showed, the Caps defeated the Smokies 9-5, with Teal Burns recording a hattrick.
The Caps have only 3 wins of the season, all coming at home. It is a unique environment at the Island Savings Centre, where the crowd is right there, and the loud fans play an active role in the game. You’ll hear that come across the broadcast today.
Derek Dun is a capable netminder, his stats don’t really reflect his play in particular. Cowichan have lost all three games of the season series, and will be keen to get one back as it reaches the half way point.
A busy busy show last night, an equally busy one today. In our 1st intermission, this week’s episode of the BCHL Roundtable. Dan Marshall, Chris Wahl and myself talking about the Canada West roster. During the 2nd break, today’s player profile segment with forward Luke Nogard. Plus comments from Nanaimo co-owner, and HNIC commentator Kelly Hrudy on the NHL lockout.
Derek Bachynski joins us after 60 or so minutes, before the Kings return home to begin next weekend.
